Using a Hyper-Flexible Online Teaching Approach: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation

Abstract

In higher education the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated a shift to online learning. Despite its uncommon practice in universities, designing courses with both flexible delivery and assessments has demonstrated enhanced understanding and improved application to professional contexts, particularly benefiting older students working full-time and managing caregiving responsibilities. Using a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative feedback through student surveys and learning management system data, this study reveals that a hyper-flexible approach effectively accommodates students, particularly those with conflicting family and professional commitments. While peer-to-peer engagement was reported to be negatively affected, students perceive this as an acceptable trade-off to flexible learning. Although not universally applicable, hyper-flexible teaching proves highly beneficial for non-traditional students with professional and personal obligations, fostering a positive learning environment conducive to deeper understanding.

Jodie Brabin, Charles Sturt University

Jodie Brabin is Head of Discipline for Health Management & Leadership at the School of Nursing, Paramedicine, and Health Sciences at CSU. Prior to joining the university, she worked as a Health Consultant in Australia and the Pacific region, focusing on health management, workforce sustainability, and innovation and redesign projects. She has previously worked in policy and performance within the Ministry of Health and supported major corporate IT system adoption while at eHealth NSW.

With a strong commitment to integrating industry expertise into her teaching, she ensures an authentic, work-ready focus. Her primary goal is to create a collaborative professional teaching and learning environment for her students. Additionally, she advocates for innovative and progressive teaching practices that cater to the diverse student body within the health management student cohort.

Samantha Jakimowicz, Charles Sturt University

Dr. Samantha Jakimowicz, an Associate Professor in Nursing and a qualified psychotherapist, has made significant contributions to research and academia. Her impressive track record includes over $1.1 million in research funding. Dr. Jakimowicz currently serves as the Associate Head of School Research & Graduate Studies in the School of Nursing Paramedicine and Healthcare Sciences. In this leadership role, she oversees research initiatives and graduate programs within the school, supporting growing research capacity and capability of all academics.
