Abstract

This issue is our third Students, Transitions, Achievement, Retention and Success (STARS) Conference special issue held in July this year in Adelaide, Australia.   As is customary, this issue of the journal publishes the top research papers selected via a peer review process and the top Emerging Initiatives selected by the Conference Committee.   

We are delighted to feature in this special  issue —Reflections on Student Persistence—prepared by Advisory Board member Professor Vincent Tinto, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at Syracuse University, USA.  Vincent is a long-time friend and supporter of STARS and its predecessor FYHE Conferences and Journal.   In his article, Vincent explores the case for motivation to be considered as a significant aspect of the tertiary student psyche by drawing on theoretical frameworks, research and practical experiences related to the issue.

Author Biography

Tracy Creagh, Queensland University of Technology

Tracy Creagh has more than ten years experience working as a research and project officer on numerous internal and external teaching and learning projects at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Research projects have principally focused on the first year experience in higher education, and the development of resources and tools for academic and professional staff responsible for student engagement. Currently Tracy is a senior project officer in the Strategic Intelligence Unit at QUT and has recently completed two Australian Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) projects: 'Establishing a framework for transforming student engagement, success and retention in higher education institutions' (2011-2013) and 'Good practice for safeguarding student learning engagement in higher education institutions' (2010-2012). She has also project-managed the extension grant project 'Effective teaching and support of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds: Resources for Australian higher education' (2013/2014) and co-project managed the extension project 'Implementing the SESR-MM to enhance student engagement practices and programs in higher education institution's (2014) Tracy is also the Journal Manager of Student Success (previously the International Journal of the First Year in Higher Education), manages the FYHE Virtual Centre and co-authored the recently published 'Trends in policies, programs and practices in the Australasian First Year Experience literature 2000–2010' (The First Year in Higher Education Research Series on Evidence-based Practice, No. 1).
