Abstract

This study evaluates faculty’s perception about research and creative activities conducted by both undergraduate and graduate students. Specifically, it examined the types of research and creative activities faculty are involved in, evaluated the time and effort involved in research and creative activities and reviewed the benefits for students and faculty engaged in research and creative activities. The findings outline some of the barriers faculty encounter in mentoring students but show that faculty members are aware of the benefits for students who engage in research and creative activities. However, they have difficulties promoting these activities due to paucity of time and resources.

Author Biographies

Francisca Beer, California State University, San Bernardino

Dr. Francisca Beer was appointed Associate Dean in 2014 and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Office of Graduate Studies. She is a Professor of Finance at CSUSB. Beer also holds the position of Director at CSUSB's Office of Student Research and has developed a number of research opportunities and programs for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Jeffrey Thompson, California State University, San Bernardino

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson was appointed Dean of Graduate Studies in 2013. Thompson, who adds the new responsibilities of dean to his existing role as associate provost for research, oversees graduate admissions and graduate policies and programs.

In his role as associate provost for research since 2005, Dr. Thompson has overseen both the pre-award and post-award grants offices, ensuring compliance with appropriate use of human and animal subjects in research. He is also responsible for ensuring research ethics training for students and faculty.
