Abstract

Welcome to our second issue for 2018.  In February we opened the year with the publication of Volume 9(1), a special issue dedicated to the top papers from the 6th Biennial National Association of Enabling Educators of Australia (NAEEA) Conference which was hosted by Southern Cross University at the Gold Coast, Australia in December 2017.   Shortly after this Conference, the Australian Government announced that undergraduate funding was to be capped at 2017 levels, effectively stopping the demand driven funding system for high education in Australia.  With that backdrop Volume 9(1) was a timely opportunity to consider the impact of disruption, and as perceptions of the value of higher education are challenged, to reiterate the value of supporting access and equity to higher education institutions.

Author Biographies

Karen Nelson, University of the Sunshine Coast

Professor Karen Nelson is the founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Student Success Journal (previously titled The International Journal of the First Year in Higher Education).  

Professor Nelson is also Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia.  Before joining USC she was the Director, Student Success and Retention and the Director, First Year Experience at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Professor Nelson’s research focuses on student engagement in higher education and she has led a series of national learning and teaching research projects in this area. Professor Nelson is a member of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia Inc (HERDSA) and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the United Kingdom (PFHEA).  Professor Nelson’s contributions to higher education have been recognised by more than ten awards including three Australian Awards for University Teaching.

Tracy Creagh, Queensland University of Technology

Tracy Creagh is the Journal Manager of the Student Success Journal with primary responsibility for the development of content, production and layout of Student Success and general ongoing management of the publication.

Ms Creagh is also a senior project officer in the Strategic Intelligence Unit at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia.  The Unit is part of Chancellery and provides leadership and expertise in institutional research, benchmarking and data analytics to guide university decision making. Tracy also provides research support in QUT's Equity Office on strategic projects.  Over the last decade Tracy has worked as a research and project officer on numerous teaching and learning projects focused on the student experience in higher education and the development of resources for academic and professional staff responsible for student engagement. Tracy is also the Journal Manager for Student Success , manages the FYHE Centre and is co-editor for the AAIR Newsletter
