Abstract

The continuing interest and commitment to improving the student experience in the tertiary sector was reflected in yet another successful Students, Transitions, Achievement, Retention and Success (STARS) Conference recently held in Perth, Western Australia (June 29-July 2, 2016).  As is customary, this issue of the journal publishes the top research papers selected via a peer review process and the top Emerging Initiatives selected by the Conference Committee.  As well, a Good Practice Report was selected for this issue.  The Invited Feature in this issue republishes an article from Professor Sally Kift, President of the Australian Learning and Teaching Fellows (and one of the Editors of Student Success). The statement draws on and is representative of the national reaction to the closure of the OLT, highlighting the substantial role it has played in developing and disseminating innovation and good practice in tertiary teaching and learning.

Author Biographies

Tracy Creagh, Queensland University of Technology

Tracy Creagh has more than ten years experience working as a research and project officer on numerous internal and external teaching and learning projects at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Research projects have principally focused on the first year experience in higher education, and the development of resources and tools for academic and professional staff responsible for student engagement. Currently Tracy is a senior project officer in the Strategic Intelligence Unit at QUT and has recently completed two Australian Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) projects: 'Establishing a framework for transforming student engagement, success and retention in higher education institutions' (2011-2013) and 'Good practice for safeguarding student learning engagement in higher education institutions' (2010-2012). She has also project-managed the extension grant project 'Effective teaching and support of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds: Resources for Australian higher education' (2013/2014) and co-project managed the extension project 'Implementing the SESR-MM to enhance student engagement practices and programs in higher education institution's (2014) Tracy is also the journal manager of Student Success (formally the International Journal of the First Year in Higher Education), manages the FYHE Virtual Centre and co-authored the recently published 'Trends in policies, programs and practices in the Australasian First Year Experience literature 2000–2010' (The First Year in Higher Education Research Series on Evidence-based Practice, No. 1).

Tracy Creagh is the Journal Manager of the Student Success Journal with primary responsibility for the development of content, production and layout of Student Success and general ongoing management of the publication.
